Siderúrgica Balboa: the first company in Extremadura to obtain CAEs

Last Friday, 20 September, Siderúrgica Balboa, a company belonging to CL Grupo Industrial’s STEEL DIVISION, became the first company in Extremadura to receive the Energy Savings Certificate (CAE), a recognition that certifies the final energy savings achieved after implementing a major efficiency measure at our facilities.

To learn more about this initiative first-hand, they were visited by the Regional Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Sustainable Development of the Regional Government of Extremadura, Mercedes Morán, together with the Director-General for Industry, Energy and Mines, Raquel Pastor, who were accompanied by Ricardo Leal, Chairman of our corporation.

In line with our commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, Siderúrgica Balboa has invested €350,000 in the installation of a heat recovery system at the exit of the steel section rolling mill. This equipment makes it possible to preheat the air used in thermal processes, thereby optimising energy consumption at the plant. Thanks to this measure, the company has been able to certify annual savings of 10.5 million kWh, which translates into a reduction of 2,224 tonnes of CO2 per year.

This milestone not only represents progress in the optimisation of its production processes, but also reinforces its commitment to environmental protection and the reduction of its carbon footprint. In addition, this achievement is only the first in a series of actions במסגרת the energy efficiency plan that our Group is already implementing both at Siderúrgica Balboa and across the rest of the corporation’s companies.

The Energy Savings Certificate is issued after obtaining a favourable report from an accredited verification body and is based on the amount of energy saved compared with consumption prior to the implementation of the measure. This system, regulated by Royal Decree 36/2023, allows companies to recover part of their investment in energy efficiency through the monetisation of the savings achieved.

During her visit, Regional Minister Mercedes Morán underlined the importance of these certificates in driving energy efficiency in the region. She highlighted that the CAE is not only a form of recognition, but also a key tool enabling companies to recover part of their investments in sustainability.

“It is a fundamental route towards a more efficient future for Extremadura’s industrial sector,” said the Regional Minister, who also took the opportunity to congratulate us on this achievement.
